Preventing and Treating Depression
From 60 Minutes journalist Mike Wallace to country pop singer Kenny Rogers, the list of guys who experience depression is pretty long. It is generally agreed that about 15 percent of adults suffer from depression at some point in their lives. Take heart: depression can be prevented and managed a number of ways.
Action Rx:
The top three tools for preventing depression include regular exercise, at least eight hours of sleep a night, and stress management. Try walking every day at a brisk pace for at least 30 minutes. Be sure to stick to a regular sleep schedule. As for stress management, you can try relaxing and strengthening exercises such as yoga, tai chi, meditative walking, or swimming. Invest in a yoga video or a meditation CD and make these part of your daily routines.
Counseling
Psychological counseling may also provide invaluable assistance and moral support. You may find excellent counseling services at local university clinics, hospitals or even theological seminaries.
Primary care physicians may provide referrals to psychiatrists. Although the relative merits of anti-depressive drugs are controversial, these can best be discussed with a medical doctor.
