Cutting Salt Use Questionable

That decades-old warning about using too much salt may have lost it's salt: Medical researchers now say cutting salt intake may be of no benefit to people with normal blood pressure.

Writing in The Journal of the American Medical Association, Danish researchers say cutting back on the salt may help people already suffering from high blood pressure, but for "most people, it will have little or no effect."

For people with hypertension, however, reducing salt intake can result in significant drops in blood pressure readings. But the researchers say salt-reduction results in people with normal blood pressure is insignificant and their study doesn't support a general recommendation to reduce sodium intake.

They concluded their report with a call for more trials to resolve often conflicting study results about the effect of salt intake on blood pressure management.
